Padma Bhushan actor Avtar Kishan Hangal was born on 1 February

Famous actor and television artist of Hindi films A K Hangal, who has been part of the Hindi film industry since 1967, has worked in about 225 films. He is known for his memorable roles in the film 'Parichay' and 'Sholay'.

Life story of AK Hangal

  • Avtar Kishan Hangal was born on February 1, 1914 in Kashmiri Pandit family in undivided India in Sialkot in the state of Punjab.
  • His father's name was Pandit Hari Kishan Hangal.
  •  His childhood was spent in Peshawar.
  • He did acting in the theater.
  • After the father's retirement, the Hangal family came to Karachi from Peshawar. After partition of India-Pakistan, Hangal family moved to Bombay in 1949.
  • Hangal remained in Pakistan jail for three years.
  • A K Hangal,  Balraj Sahni and Kaifi Azmi in Mumbai got involved with the Epta Theater in Mumbai.
  • In his film career from 1966 to 2005, he worked in 225 films.
  • In the film, Sholay in 1975, a dialogue spoken by A K Hangal “Itna sannata kyun hai bhai” was on the tongue of people for so long.
  •  He played characters such as father, uncle or grandfather in Hindi films.
  • His first film was Basu Bhattacharya's Teesri Kasam (1966). His last film was Amol Palekar's Paheli (2005), starring Shah Rukh Khan.
  • Shaukeen, Namak Haram, Aaina, Avatar, Arjun, Aandhi Toofan, Kora Kaagaz, Baawarchi, Guddi, Abhimaan and Parichay are his major films.
  • AK Hangal played character roles in Television also.  Bombay Blue, Jeevan Rekha, Chandrakanta and Zabaan Sambahl ke etc are his major serials. In fact, he played a guest appearance in Color’s tv’s “Madhubala”.

Awards and Honors

A K Hangal was honored with Padma Bhushan by the Governemnt of India in 2006.

On 26 August 2012, this long lived PadmaShri actor said Good Bye to the world. He died in the age of 95, suffering with the illness of old age, in Asha Parekh Hospital in Mumbai.
