Gurdial Singh is a well known story writer of Punjabi language who speaks of common man. Like many famous writers, the achievement of Gurdial Singh as a nov?elist can also be seen in terms of his early life experiences.

Detailed Life story of Gurdial Singh

Prof. Gurdial Singh was born on 10 January 1933.

Gurdial Singh’s  life was spent in a lot of conflicts. Due to domestic reasons, he started working after leaving school.

From his childhood he had special interest in art and literature, and he first started it with painting and singing.

After passing his 10th, he started teaching in private school.

After getting higher education, he became a lecturer and after 15 years, he became the first Reader in Punjabi University Patiala and then retired from the post of Professor.

Gurdial also kept kirtan in Jitto's Gurdwara Gangsar.

He was not satisfied with it, he started writing and never looked back.

In the year 19?57, he wrote the first story ‘Bhaga Walen’, which was written by Prof. Mohan Singh's journal was published in Panj Dariya.

In 1962 his first story collection 'Sagghi Full' was published.

The first novel, Madi da Diwa, written in the year 1964, brought him to world-class writers and famous critics Dr. Namwar Singh, Dr. Atar Singh, Dr. Amrik Singh, Dr. Joginder Singh etc. called it a trend setter. .

In addition to Hindi and English of Madi da Diwa, five million copies were sold in Russian, which was a  record in itself.

At a time, his novel, Addh Chanani raat, Anhoye, Kuvela, Anne ghode da Daan, Poh futile to pehlan, Parsa, Retein die ek mutthi, Aahan etc.were published, on the other hand,  many stories collection were also published there.

First Punjabi film ‘Anne Ghode da Daan’ is based on his novel, which was shown at the International Film Festival of Italy. Apart from this, the film has been released in five other countries.

Besides it, his name is written in Limca Book of Records in 2015 and a few years ago, Bharatiya Sahitya Academy of New Delhi declared to present him Life Fellowship.

Professor Gurdial Singh had a good grip on matters related to Punjab and Punjabis as well as literature.

On 16 August 2016, he died, in Bhatinda Punjab, suffering from fever since long time, leaving a mournful breeze in the literature world.
