Evergreen actor Dev Anand was born today

Dharmadev Anand, popularly known as Dev Anand, was an actor, writer, director, producer and comedian of Bollywood known for his notable works in the history of Indian cinema. He is considered one of the most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema.

Facts about Dev Anand

  • Dev Anand aspired to become an artist after watching Ashok Kumar's performance in films like Achhoot Kanya and Kismat.
  • He made his acting debut with Prabhat Films' Hum Ek Hai (1946).
  • Dev Anand was paired opposite singer-actress Suraiya in seven films - Vidya (1948), Jeet (1949), Shayar (1949), Afsar (1950), Neeli (1950 ), Do Sitare (1951) and Sanam (1951) which were all successful at the box office.
  • He had his first big succerss with Kamini Kaushal co-starring Ziddi (1948).
  • In 1949, he launched his own company Navketan Films with his elder brother Chetan Anand.
  • He had an intense emotional love affair with actress Suraiya during 19481951.
  • Unfortunately it could not reach the wedding altar due to the objections of Suraiya's grandmother.
  • Since then, until Dev Anand died on 31 January 2004, Suraiya remained unmarried.
  • In 1954 Dev Anand married actress Kalpana Karthik with whom he has two children, Sunil Anand and Devina Anand (Narang).
  • The Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2002 for his contribution to Indian cinema.
