Dhirendra Nath Ganguly, (born 26 March 1893 - died November 18, 1978) was a famous film actor and film director of Bengali cinema. Dhirendra Ganguly or DG (D.G.) He was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1975 for his unprecedented contributions to Indian cinema.

Dhirendra Ganguly was born on 26 March 1893 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). He took his education from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan and later became Headmaster at the State Arts School of Hyderabad.

In Calcutta, Dhirendra Ganguly, along with some of his friends, founded the Indo-British Film Company. In 1921, Ganguly made a bizarre movie 'England Returned' (Bilav ferat). The story of the film was centered on an Indian who returned home from a foreign country after a very long time. What happened with her after returning was shown in a satirical manner.

The film was quite successful then. Seeing the success of this film, Jamshed ji bought his distribution rights. Later, the Indo-British film company made two films, and Ganguly again went to Hyderabad. Here he established two theaters and a laboratory. Under the banner of Lotus Film Company, he made ten films from 1923 to 1927 under the protection of the Nizam of Hyderabad.

But when the eleventh movie 'Razia Sultan' was created, the Nizam became angry and asked Dhirendra Ganguly to leave Hyderabad and said that he would leave. In this film, love was shown between a Muslim woman and a Hindu youth. Dhirendra returned to Calcutta and there he founded the British Dominion Film Company. While Jamshedji Madan and Dhirendra Ganguly became active in Calcutta, Baburao Painter in Kolhapur after Mumbai also tried the hand in film production.
