Chipko movement: On this day

Google today celebrates the 45th anniversary of a clever movement through a doodle. The Chipko movement refers to a nonviolent movement for the protection of the forest. Beginning in the 1970s, the name of the Chipko movement was found in the name of people who had embraced the trees to save them from being cut. The Chipko movement followed Gandhian philosophy of peaceful resistance and revolted against those who destroyed ecological balance.

The original Chipko movement has taken place in the 18th century Rajasthan. A large group of people of Bishnoi community protested against cutting of trees by embracing them. The trees were being cut off on the orders of the Maharaja of Jodhpur, but immediately after the agitation, they ordered a royal order to prevent the cutting of trees in all Bishnoi villages.

In modern India, Chipko movement was started in Upper Alaknanda valley in April, 1973 in Mandal village of Uttarakhand (then a part of Uttar Pradesh). Soon it spread to other Himalayan districts of the state. The government's decision to allocate forest land to a sports manganese company started the Chipko movement. Angered by this move, villagers have created circles around trees to stop the reduction. Under the leadership of local women, Chipko movement was led by Chand Chandi Prasad Bhatt and his non-governmental organization, Dapoli Village Swarajya Sangh.

  • Inspired by success, the Chipko movement spread to other parts of the country. Some of the key figures of the Chipko movement were Dhoom Singh Negi, Bachni Devi, Gaura Devi and Sudesha Devi.
  • Gandhian activist Sunderlal Bahuguna instructed the movement and appealed to then Indira Gandhi, then prime minister of that time, which prevented the ban of trees cutting.
  • Google said, "The Chipko Andolan is also standing as an ecological-feminist movement. Women constitute the nucleus of the movement, because the group is directly affected due to deforestation due to lack of forests and drinking."
  • Today's doodles have been illustrated by Svabhu Kohli and Vipalov Singh and celebrate the bravery and perseverance of all ecological conservationists around the world, and thank them for their efforts.
  • "The power of protest is an invaluable and powerful agent of social change. Take some time to embrace your favorite tree-mugs in the festival of Chikpo movement!"
