Bharat Ratna: India' highest civilian honor was started today

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian honor of the country, which is given for extraordinary national service. This honor was started by the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad, on 2 January 1954.

Bharat Ratna is given for these services: Some special services have been selected for Bharat Ratna. These services include arts, literature, science, public service and sports. However, the sports was not included before but it was later included in the list. More than three persons can be given 'Bharat Ratna' in a year.

12 Peoples got Bharat Ratna posthumous: Initially there was no provision to postpone this honor, but later this provision was added in the year 1955. After which, Bharat Ratna is given posthumous. So far 12 people have been honored posthumously. However, the number of those who receive posthumous honors can be considered 11 after excluding Subhash Chandra Bose whose name was taken back after declaration.

The look of earlier Bharat Ratna medal: In the original form Bharat Ratna's medal shape was spherical. It was a 35 mm thick gold medal, in which the sun was made at front face, Bharat Ratna was written in Hindi above and there was a coronation and the back was National Embelm with Motto. Later, the design of this medal was changed to the sunlight of Platinum on the leaf of copper. Below it is written in silver- 'Bharat Ratna' and it is worn with white lace.

Number of peoples received this honor: So far, 41 people have been honored with Bharat Ratna. Chakravarti Rajgopalachari , Sir C V Raman and Sarvpalli Radhakrishnan were the first honored with Bharat Ratna in 1954. This list includes people from every area of ??society. The first person to receive Bharat Ratna from the sports world is Sachin Tendulkar.
