With 12% global imports, India is the top of the list of arms buyer: Current affairs

Failure to build a strong defense manufacturing industry ensures that India remains in the strategic-weak position of being the world's largest arms importer by 12% of global imports from 2013-2017. According to the International Weapon Transfer figures released by the Global Think Tank Stockholm International Peace Research Institute on Monday, arms import by India increased by 24% between 2008-2012 and 2013-2017.

India is the world's top arms importer in place of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, China, Australia, Algeria, Iraq, Pakistan and Indonesia. From 2013-2017, India's largest arms supplier was Russia (62%), US (15%) and Israel (11%).

India remains the largest buyer of arms from Russia and Israel, as part of its foreign policy, to combat China's growing influence in China, China has projected military sales to India - $ 15 billion in the last decade and up to 557% between 2008-2012 and 2013-2017 - overtook many countries and relocating Russia to the top spot for some years.
