Tripura second place in child marriage cases: report

According to the study, the national average of child marriage of girls aged 15 to 19 years is 11.9 percent, but for Tripura this figure is 21.6 percent.

According to a recent study by Oxford University, Tripura is one of the northeast states of India, second in the country in cases of child marriage. According to the study, cases of marriage of girls from 15 to 19 years have been observed in Tripura.

The title of this study is 'Young Lives - An International Study on Childhood Poverty' in which the National Family Health Survey (2015-16) has been cited. It states that in all the cases of child marriage occurring in the state, 80 percent of the marriages occur in rural areas located in three districts. This study is done jointly by a team of Oxford University.

  • According to the study, the national average of child marriage of girls aged 15 to 19 years is 11.9 percent, but for Tripura this figure is 21.6 percent.
  • This study has also revealed that among the 100 districts of the country, four such districts of Tripura are included, where child marriage is very prevalent.
  • It has also been revealed in the report that the child marriage rate in Tripura's Dhali district is 24.7 percent, which is the highest in the state. Other districts of high prevalence of child marriage include South Tripura, Northern Tripura and West Tripura.
  • On the analysis of the number of children born with girls becoming a mother in adolescence, it has been observed that 52 percent of married girls have given birth to at least one child.
  • Of these, 5.5 percent girls gave birth to at least 2 children and more than 2 children in one percent.

Status of child marriage in India

According to the National Family Health Survey -4 (2015-16), the average child marriage dispute is 11.9% in the country. Some increase in the figures in Himachal Pradesh and Manipur has definitely been recorded. Statistics of NFHS3 (2005-06) NFHS-4 (2015-16) data has improved considerably in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh has reduced rates from 29 per cent to just 6.4 per cent. West Bengal has also improved, but it is relatively less. In Bengal, the rate has decreased from 25 per cent to 25.6 per cent.

Child marriage legal offense

Child marriage is a punishable offense under the Child Marriage Prohibition Act 2006. In this, there is a provision of a two-year jail and one lakh rupees for marriage of girls below 18 years of age. There is also provision for legal action on people participating in such a marriage.
