Pathankot Court gave justice to Asifa in Kathua Rape Case

A special court in Pathankot, Punjab has given the verdict in the Kathua Rape case. The court convicted six of the seven convicts in the case. The lawyer of the victim, who came out of the court, Mubeen Farooqi said that all the six accused have been convicted except Vishal Jangotra.

Convicted

  • In the case, Anand Dutta, Deepak Khajuria, Sanjhi Ram, Tilak Raj, Surinder Sharma and Pravesh Kumar have been convicted.
  • The court has acquitted Vishal Jangotra.
  • Police Officer Deepak Khajuria, Pravesh Kumar and Sanjhi Ram have been convicted under the 376D, 302, 201, 363, 120B, 343 and 376B. They are penalized for Life Time imprisonment.
  • Head Constable Tilak Raj, S I Anand Dutta and Police Officer Surinder Sharma have been convicted under section 201 of the IPC. These three convicts will be imprisoned for five years
  • The hearing on the matter was completed in the closed room on 03 June 2019 and the verdict was fixed on June 10, 2019.

Case History

  • On January 23, 2018, the Jammu and Kashmir government submitted the investigation to the State Police Crime Branch.
  • The Crime Branch filed a charge sheet in the Kathua court on April 10, 2018 in this case.
  • The court gave the charge sheet after the date of April 18, 2018 for hearing of the case.
  • Main accused of this entire incident, Sanjhi Ram surrendered before the police on 05th April, 2018.
  • The Supreme Court on 16th April, 2018 asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to respond to the matter that the families of the victims have demanded that the trials of the case be taken out of the state.
  • In the first week of June 2018, District and Sessions Court in Pathankot in neighboring Punjab, about 100 km from Jammu and 30 km from Kathua, neighboring Punjab, started daily hearing of this case.
  • The Supreme Court had ordered the hearing of this case to be taken out of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Supreme Court had moved the matter on May 07, 2018 from Kathua to Pathankot in Punjab.
  • A 15-page charge sheet was filed in the case.
  • Session Judge Tejwinder Singh heard the case whose name is recorded in the Limca Book of Record for becoming Civil Judge at the youngest age.

 

What was incident

  • On 10 January 2018, a 8 years old girl, Asifa Bano, belonging to the Bakkarwal Community was kidnapped.  
  • On 17th January 2018, her body was found in a mangled condition.
  • There was protests across the country against this sensational issue and justice was sought for the victim.
  • In this loathsome case, the Jammu and Kashmir Police filed a 15-page charge sheet which contained many shocking disclosures.
