Jews were given religious minority status in Gujarat

Religious minority status was given to the Jewish community in the state by the Gujarat government. The state's Social Justice and Empowerment Department issued an order for this effect.

Government order has said that after careful consideration, the Gujarat government has decided to provide religious minority community status to the Jewish community living in the state. After this decision, the people of the Jewish community will get the benefit of the welfare schemes prepared for religious minority communities in the state.

Background

The people of the Jewish community wanted to achieve minority status for a long time. The community had also handed over a memorandum to the state government for getting minority status.

The number of Jews in Gujarat is quite small. Their number is almost two hundred and they mostly live in Ahmedabad.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, during his six-day visit to Israel, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and assured him of giving minority status to the Jews in Gujarat.
