Jammu and Kashmir administration declares Ladakh as separate division

The Jammu and Kashmir administration recently announced separation of Ladakh from Kashmir and declared it a separate division or division. With this announcement, now three administrative units in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh will be employed in the state.

In the order issued by the state administration, it has been said that administrative and revenue department will also be made separately for Ladakh for which headquarter will be built in Leh. In addition to this, a committee under the leadership of the Chief Secretary has also been formed for the development and monitoring of the scheme. The committee will also identify the positions of the staff, the responsibilities and the office, in addition to marking the positions of the division level of different departments in the newly constituted Ladakh division.

Background

Councils have been constituted for Leh and Kargil only under Jammu Kashmir Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council Act, 1997. LAHDC Act 1997 was revised in 2018 only to strengthen these councils financially, administrative and legislative. The population density in Ladakh is very low and it is an area with very extreme geographical conditions, so giving such importance to that area can be a better step.
