IIT Kharagpur created Artificial Intelligence System to stop rumors spreading during disasters

IIT Kharagpur created Artificial Intelligence System to stop rumors spreading during disasters

Generally there is a natural disaster, so many types of fake rumors or fakes news spread on the social media. But now, to avoid such fake rumors, IIT Kharagpur has created a system with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology which will prevent such rumors from spreading on social media.

Saptarishi Ghosh, of computer science and engineering department of IIT Kharagpur, told that as soon as there is a fake rumor or fake news share related to the disaster on social media, the AI ??system will send the same to the concerned officer to know the truth of this post.

Ideas developed by Chennai floods

  • IIT Kharagpur's idea of ??making this system come from fake rumors spread across the Chennai flood in 2016.
  • According to the institute, information from the affected area can be analyzed by analyzing and mapping by Fake News. Apart from this, Fake News can also identify social media accounts spreading.
  • Saptarshi Ghosh said that 'our system can detect Fake News and with the help of machine learning algorithms, alert social media users during disasters.'

 System works accurately 90%:

  • At present, these systems of IIT Kharagpur can only help prevent false rumors and fake reports spreading during disasters.
  • Saptarishi Ghosh said that his system works up to at least 90% accuracy in separating duplicate news in real news.
  • Apart from this, they claim that information can be gathered with the help of this system through which the victims can be helped.
  • They have estimated that only 2% of tweets have information related to disasters, whereas the rest of the content is either negotiation or sympathy for the victims.
  • Working of System: As soon as there will be any tweet in Hindi or English about the situation of the victims affected by the disaster, the computer program will read the content of this tweet and send it to the concerned officer for correct information.
  • Ghosh said that during the disasters, the AI ??method is being developed to isolate the information that is needed and urgently needed from the content posted on social media.

Funds from entities like Microsoft: IIT Kharagpur started the system as a pilot project on WhatsApp and Twitter during the 2015 Nepal earthquake and Chennai floods in 2016.

To work on this project, IIT Kharagpur has received funds from Microsoft Research India, ITRA, Media Labs Asia and Electronics and Information Technology Department.

Saptarshi Ghosh said that IIT Kharagpur has given a proposal to Microsoft Research India in association with Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI) and if it is approved, then we will work together with Microsoft and QCRI.

For relief rescue work,  Works on web-based systems

  • Apart from this IIT Kharagpur wants to develop a web-based system to help rescue relief operations after the disaster.
  • Ghosh told that the web-based system will identify the actionable information using our algorithm. With this help the person sitting in the control room will get live updates.
  • Apart from this, he said that the information of the people trapped in the disaster will also be received through the smartphone and the rescue workers will be saved.
