Former Defense Minister George Fernandes passed away

Former Defense Minister of India George Fernandes died on January 29, 2019 at Max Hospital, New Delhi. He was 88 years old. In Delhi, he breathed last morning at 7 a.m. George Fernandes was running ill for a long time, he was upset with Alzheimer's disease.

During the Vajpayee government, George Fernandes was the Defense Minister of the country. Last time he was a Rajya Sabha MP from August 2009 to July 2010. Fernandes held several important departments like the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Industry in the Government of India.

  • George Fernandes was born on June 3, 1930, in Karnataka. He was an Indian politician. Apart from this he was also a former leader and journalist of the labor organization.
  • In the 14th Lok Sabha, he was elected MP from Muzaffarpur on Janata Dal (United) ticket.
  • He was the Defense Minister in the Central Government of the National Democratic Alliance from 1998 to 2004.
  • In the year 1977, after the Emergency was removed, Fernandes won the Muzaffarpur seat in Bihar in absentia and was appointed the Union Minister of Industries.
  • During his tenure as Union Minister, he ordered the US multinationals IBM and Coca-Cola to leave the country due to the violation of the investment.
  • George Fernandes won 9 Lok Sabha elections from 1967 to 2004.
  • In order to avoid arrest during the Emergency, George Fernandes wearing a turban and wearing a beard used to wear a Sikh, while after the arrest, he recited verses of holy book ‘Geeta’ to the prisoners.
  • After the 1974 Rail Strike, he emerged as the leader of the opposition and he had opposed the imposition of emergency with vacuity.

George Fernandes and the Railway Strike

In 1973, George Fernandes was elected the Chairman of the All India Railway Association. About 1.4 million people used to work in Indian Railways at that time. India constitutes almost seven percent of the total organized sector. Railway workers have been making some urgent demands from the government for many years but the government was not paying attention to them. In such a case, George Fernandes called on nationwide rail strike on 08 May 1974. This strike was organized so that the operation of the railways across the country became stagnant. For many days, the entire railway work was halted. From the movement of the railway to the freight, everything has stopped.

The government arrested about 30,000 workers while taking actions on the agitators. Fernandes was also arrested in this. Thousands of people had to suffer from a job. During this time the work in the country was jammed. On this call on the call of George Fernandes, electricians, transport workers and taxi operators were joined with the railway staff. After three weeks the strike was announced to finish.
