Famous Padmashree  Birha Singer Hira Lal Yadav passed away

India's famous Birha singer Hiralal Yadav died in Varanasi on May 12, 2019.  He was 93 years old. He was ill for some time and he was undergoing treatment. His wife, six sons and three daughters are in the family of Hiralal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the passing away of Birha singer Hiralal Yadav and tweeted that it was very sad due to the demise of Varanasi's Birha Singer Hiralal Yadav Ji. His death is irreparable damage to the field of folk songs. In this moment of mourning, my condolences are with his fans and family.

Significantly, President Ramnath Kovind honored Hiralal on March 16, 2019 with Padma Shri. Even after the discomfort, he reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to receive the honor. For the first time in last 70 years, Birha was honored.

Biography of Hiralal

  • Hiralal was born in 1941 in Saryagovardhan, located in Chetganj. He had lived his childhood in poverty.
  • He usually used to sing amateur, but due to his strong voice, he found a different place and managed to identify at national level. Later on he became popular as the 'Birha Samrat'.
  • He continued to familiarize the people with their partner Bullu and went to village to village for about seven decades with the Hira-Bullu couple.
  • He started to present Birha from AIR and Doordarshan from the year 1962, which was highly appreciated by the people across the country.
  • Hiralal was awarded the Padma Shri in the year 2019.

Birha

  • Birha is a popular mode of folklore in the Bhojpuri speaking area of ??eastern Uttar Pradesh and Western Bihar.
  • Origin of Birha is believed to be in the beginning of the 19th century.  Especially when the tendency of wages in the metros was increased after migrating from rural areas during British rule.
  • Such workers had to stay away from their families for long periods for livelihood.
  • After the hard work of the day, in the small groups of people, they used to sing Biraha's loud voices in the night to erase their distraction.
  • Two types of Biraha singing are heard. The first type is called Khari birhaa and the second form is a Manchiya biraha.
  • There is no accompaniment of instruments in a vertical biraha while musical instruments are used in the Manchiya biraha.
  • Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have traditions of 'Birha' singing on festivals or festive occasions. There is also the trend of 'Birha Dangal' in the premises of the temple at a particular festival.
