 4 new justices appointed in Supreme Court

Supreme Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi administered the oath of Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice R. Subhash Reddy, Justice M R Shah and Justice Ajay Rastogi as Supreme Judge of the Supreme Court on 02 November 2018.

In the shortest time the President accepted the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium and passed the order of appointment in the Supreme Court of the Judges. The appointments of these four judges will be effective from the date of their adoption.

Number of judges in the Supreme Court:  With the swearing of four new judges, the total number of judges in the Supreme Court was 28. While in the Supreme Court, the total sanctioned posts of judges are 31, in which three posts remain vacant.

Recommend to appoint Supreme Court judge: The Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur, Justice Kurien Joseph, Justice AK Sikri and Justice S.A. Bobde's Collegium had on October 30 asked the government to appoint these four judges as the Supreme Court Judge.

These four judges, Justice Hemant Gupta, Justice R. Subhash Reddy, Justice Mukesh Kumar Rasikbhai Shah and Justice Ajay Rastogi come in the rank of seniority of All India High Court Judges at 4,5,17 and 25.

Justice Hemant Gupta: Justice Hemant Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on March 18, 2017. Justice Gupta has also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Patna High Court. His tenure was as long as Chief Justice till October 2019, but after being appointed the Supreme Court Justice, he will now retire in 2022.

Justice R. Subhash Reddy: Justice R. Subhash Reddy was the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. Justice Reddy took over as the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court in February 2016. He stayed 2 years and eight months in this post. Reddy has obtained law degree from the University College of Law, Osmania University, Hyderabad. R. Subhash Reddy has also been working as the Chief Justice of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh State in the Hyderabad High Court.

Justice MR Shah: Justice MR Shah was the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Justice Shah was sent by the Gujarat High Court in August 2018 as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. Justice MR Shah was born on May 16, 1958. Shah started practicing in the Gujarat High Court in the year 1982 after getting the LLB degree. In the Gujarat High Court, he was restored as Additional Judge on 7 March 2004 and on 22nd June 2005 he became a permanent judge.

Justice Ajay Rastogi: Earlier, Justice Ajay Rastogi was the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Justice Rastogi belongs to Jaipur. Significantly, Judge Rastogi was appointed Judge on September 02, 2004 at the Rajasthan High Court. He has also been the Acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court.

Age of retirement age in High Court and Supreme Court: The retirement age of the judge in the High Court is 62. The Supreme Court Justice retires at the age of 65 years.
